Air sampling plea
Written by Margo Ashmore
Posted 8/19/2014
If you’ve been intrigued by recent articles in the Northeaster and NorthNews about air quality, here’s something you can do: Volunteers are still needed to host the sampling canisters for August 25-28 in four different areas of Northeast and North Minneapolis.

All you have to do is put the canister outside in a safe place, chain it to something that won’t walk off, open it at 5 p.m. Monday and close it at 5 p.m. Thursday. It’s a simple lever.

Volunteers do also need to pick up and drop off the canister at the testing lab, Pace Analytical, in Southeast Minneapolis. The pickup can be done immediately before the Monday test, or between 11:30 and 1 p.m. that day.

If you’re in one of these areas and want to volunteer, call Jenni Lansing of the City of Minneapolis at 612-673-3023. The areas are:

- North Minneapolis between 44th and 34th Avenues N., from Emerson west to the city limits.

- North Minneapolis between Golden Valley Road and Plymouth, from Fremont west to the city limits.

- Northeast Minneapolis in the uppermost Northeast corner

- Northeast/Southeast south and east of Broadway and University (roughly).

Study organizers would like to have the same volunteers host canisters in August, November, February, May, and August of 2015, but you do not have to commit to all.

Mississippi Minute Film Festival
Posted 8/14/2014
The Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership announces the opening of its Mississippi Minute Film Festival. While revitalization efforts have reclaimed portions of the Minneapolis riverfront, much of it is still inaccessible and in places virtually invisible. Create a one-minute film that tugs at heartstrings or makes people laugh, that showcases an appreciation for--or the future potential of--the urban riverfront in Minneapolis. The film should inform, energize, and inspire our citizenry to action--all in 60 seconds. Submissions are due by Sept. 4, 5 p.m. Winning entries will be screened and honorees named at the third annual Minneapolis Riverfront Summit on Monday, Oct. 20 at the Mill City Museum. More details at www.mississippiminute.org.
