Thursday: Groundbreaking ceremony for Sheridan Veterans Memorial

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and Park Board Commissioner Liz Wielinski will hold a special ceremonial groundbreaking event for the Sheridan Veterans Memorial Thursday, May 23, 10 a.m. at Sheridan Memorial Park, 1300 Water St. NE. The program for the groundbreaking ceremony will feature the presenting and retrieving of flags by Fridley Shaddrick and Labeau American Legion Post 303, comments by neighborhood representatives and elected officials, the official groundbreaking and the presentation of a memorial wreath to recognize all veterans as a prelude to the Memorial Day weekend. All are welcome to join in the celebration.

Benefit for Kody’s Closet

Kody’s Closet is holding its first annual benefit on Saturday, June 1, 6-9 p.m. at the Moose on Monroe, 356 Monroe St. NE. There will also be a golf tournament earlier that day at Columbia Golf Course (registration due May 20; call 612-237-9222 for details). Kody’s Closet is a non-profit organization that helps build self-esteem and improve the lives and futures of our youth by providing hygiene products to underprivileged kids. The group hopes to have a Kody’s Closet filled with personal hygiene products in all area metro schools. Kody’s Closet was created in memory of Kody (Kodiak) Thorn who unexpectedly passed away at age 18. According to the group’s Facebook page, while Kody was in high school, he would casually offer friends in need items from his mom’s storage closet which was filled with products due to her passion of extreme couponing. Whether it was deodorant, toothpaste or soap, Kody’s mother would offer products to those friends whose parents were struggling to make ends meet. Ticket price for the evening event is $20 plus one hygiene product donation (includes dinner and beer until 8 p.m., cash bar available). More information on Facebook or at kodyscloset.org.

 North Community High School, 1500 James Ave. N, will host a presentation by gospel singer and actress, Kitra Williams, on May 24. Williams starred in the stage plays, Tyler Perry’s "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" and Oprah Winfrey’s "The Color Purple." She will also be attending and addressing other high school students throughout the Twin Cities area. On Saturday, May 25, 6-8 p.m., Kitra Williams will perform at North High School Auditorium. Adopt the yard of an elderly resident of Minneapolis this summer. Choose your own schedule, mow once per week or so depending upon weather conditions. Perfect opportunity for apartment/condo dwellers that yearn to be outside. Work alone or with a partner. Family teams welcome (youth must be age seven or older and supervised by an adult). Locations in North or Southwest Minneapolis. Ongoing volunteer opportunities are also available. Pierre Bottineau French Immersion School, 1501 30th Ave. N, will host open houses featuring a free French lesson for children 4-8 years old, a building tour, light refreshments, and a chance to learn more about the school. Open houses are scheduled for Saturdays, May 18 and June 22, 10:30 a.m.-noon. The school is accepting enrollment requests for students who will be in grades K-4 for 2013-14.
